Teaching the public and health care professional about suicidality in veterans
Members of the VISN 19 MIRECC have traveled both locally and nationally to teach members of the public and health care professionals about suicidality in veterans. Venues have been varied and have included didactic seminars, paper presentations, posters, and key note addresses at local and national conferences. In addition to providing vital information regarding veteran suicidality, special attention has been paid to addressing specific risks associated with those in high risk populations (e.g., traumatic brain injury survivors, OEF/OIF combat veterans). Presentations have been made in both rural (e.g., Fort Harrison, Montana) and urban locations (e.g., Atlantic City, New Jersey), and at VA and non-VA meetings. Special emphasis has been placed on reaching providers who may be treating veterans who are not seeking care within the VA system. Past efforts have included outreach to law enforcement providers, health educators, and members of the brain injury community.

Training residents of psychiatry, psychology, social work, and nursing about suicidality in veterans
Certainly the training of students has partially been accomplished as described above. Moreover, specific didactic seminars have been offered to nursing students, psychology interns, and psychiatry and physical medicine and rehabilitation residents. Starting in academic year 2007-2008, psychology interns have been provided with the opportunity to rotate with the MIRECC. This year alone three students have selected this rotation. Within the context of this training these students have/will receive(d) specialized training in assessing veterans with significant suicidality. Moreover, each of the students has or is in the process of completing an independently mentored collaborative research/educational activity.

Training clinical investigators
The training of clinical investigators occurs on two levels. First, and perhaps most formally, psychology and psychiatry fellows receive training in mentored research. The aims of this training program are outlined in the included description regarding the Special Fellowship Program in Advanced Psychiatry and Psychology. Moreover, all members of the MIRECC research teams benefit from ongoing collaborative relationships inside and outside of the VISN 19 MIRECC. For example, the Denver psychology research group meets weekly to discuss design, human subjects, and statistical issues. Moreover, current collaborations are underway with several centers/groups including the VA Center of Excellence in Canandaigua, the VA Health Economics Resource Center, and University of Colorado Neurbehavioral Disorders Program, the Suicide Risk Management and Surveillance Office (SRMSO), Madigan Army Medical Center (MAMC) & Department of Defense (DoD) Center of Excellence for Traumatic Brain Injury and Psychological Health, and the Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center.
