Pilot Study Research Program (details)
The Pilot Study Research Program is for investigators who want to collect preliminary data leading to federally funded research programs designed to improve the delivery of behavioral health services to rural/underserved veterans. Pilot studies are usually $75,000 or less. Expenses must be justified and proposals with more modest budgets are welcomed. For studies that require multiple sites, additional funds may be requested.
Submissions should address current areas of SC MIRECC emphasis (i.e., Mental health and aging, Stress and resilience in OEF/OIF veterans, and Mental health in non-specialty settings). All MIRECC Core and Affiliate Research Investigators and Fellows are eligible to apply.
Trainee proposals (i.e., those from Fellows, residents, or interns) must include a MIRECC Core or Affiliate Research Investigator as Co-Principal Investigator. Applications will be accepted four times per year:
- July 1
- October 1
- January 1
- April 1
- (or following Monday after a weekend)

The MIRECC Implementation, Design and Analysis Support core (MIDAS)supports research and educational efforts by offering assistance in services research and outcomes assessment. We work with MIRECC investigators to enhance methodological and data collection infrastructures for proposed projects.
- We will provide you expertise in outcomes assessment and traditional clinical measures (including medication compliance and treatment adherence), as well as development of new psychometrically sound measures.
- We will make available to you our knowledge of and background in biostatistics, econometrics, epidemiology, psychometrics, medical geography
and qualitative data collection and analysis.
- We will help you design cutting-edge research projects using methods that bridge the gap between clinical research and services research.
- We will retain a group of key Core Team members who will respond to your request and be flexible in matching you with a consultant.
Mentoring
The MIRECC offers to identify, contact and facilitate initial contact between an investigator inexperienced in a particular approach or methodology and a researcher who is senior in their field of interest. These contacts may take the form of broad guidance for more junior investigators (mentoring) or more focused guidance for investigators of all levels of experience regarding specific research questions (consultation).
Because mentorship implies an ongoing relationship, mentors for junior investigators are typically selected from more senior South Central MIRECC core, affiliate, or collaborative researchers. In contrast, consultants are selected nationwide from inside and outside the VA.
