Biography

Biography: Dr. Stephen A. Maisto received his Ph.D. in experimental psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 1975 and then completed a postdoctoral research traineeship in alcohol dependence at Vanderbilit University 1975-1978. He also completed a postdoctoral respecialization in clinical psychology at George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University in 1985. Dr. Maisto was an assistant professor of psychology at Vanderbilt University 1980-1985, and then worked at the VA Medical Center, Providence, RI, Butler Hospital in Providence, the VA Medical Center in Brockton, MA, and the VA Medical Center in Pittsburgh, while during those years (1985-1994) Dr. Maisto held faculty positions in the Departments of Psychiatry at Brown University the the University of Pittsburgh Medical Schools, respectively. In 1994 Dr. Maisto moved to Syracuse University, where he has been professor of psychology since then. In 2004, at the inception of the VA Center of Integrated Healthcare, Dr. Maisto was named its Director of Research and assumed the position of Executive Director from 2007 - 2014. He now serves as a CIH Senior Consultant for Research and Leadership.

Research Interests: Dr. Maisto's research interests span a wide range and include assessment and treatment of substance use and problems in non-clinical and clinical populations, basic research on the development of substance use patterns and problems, HIV prevention and intervention, especially regarding their overlap with substance use, and the integration of behavioral healthcare in the primary care setting. Dr. Maisto has received support for his research in these areas continuously for the last 25 years from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs
