Title: Cocaine cues and dopamine in dorsal striatum: mechanism of craving in cocaine addiction. Journal of Neuroscience Volume 26 (24) 6583-6588, 2006.
Description: This article -- a collaborative effort between the VISN 4 MIRECC Neuroimaging Core, the NIDA Intramural Program and Brookhaven Laboratories -- is the first demonstration that dopamine release occurs during cue-induced cocaine craving in humans. This finding is a critical proof-of-concept for guiding medication development, and has immediate translational implications, as medications that modulate dopamine (such as the GABAergics) would be expected to have particular clinical benefit. In VISN 4 MIRECC, we are thus testing the GABA B agonist baclofen, and it indeed shows promise in blunting both drug craving and the brain response to drug cues.
