VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness – Salt Lake City VA

Applications are currently being accepted for the VISN 19 MIRECC VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment, which is housed at the Salt Lake City MIRECC. This is a two-year position commencing in the summer or fall of 2012. Programmatic emphasis is on the brain and behavior as they relate to suicide and serious psychiatric disorders. The Fellow’s distribution of effort will be 75% research and 25% clinical.

The mission of the VISN 19 MIRECC Postdoctoral Psychology Fellowship Program is to train psychologists to become outstanding clinical researchers in the high priority area of mental health care for Veterans, specifically in the area of suicide. The clinical and research focus of the VISN 19 MIRECC is the treatment and assessment of individuals with severe psychiatric disorders, including combat related syndromes, who are also at risk for suicide. There is an emphasis on the accurate evaluation of the interaction between cognition and suicide in individuals with psychiatric diagnoses. There is also an emphasis on the neurobiology of individuals with severe psychiatric disorders who are also at risk for suicide.

To apply candidates should submit the following:

  1. A letter of interest that identifies career goals, expectations, and the goodness of fit with the mission of the VISN 19 MIRECC
  2. A current curriculum vitae including a summary of prior research experience
  3. Letter of completion from academic and internship/residency programs
  4. Three letters of recommendation
  5. Sample de-identified neuro/psychological evaluation report and a summary regarding number and types of neuro/psychological tests administered and reports written. (Some background in neuropsychological assessment is preferred.)

The program is structured so that there is an opportunity for the Psychology Fellows to gain adequate hours toward licensure.

Prior to beginning the postdoctoral experience, candidates are expected to have attained a high level of accomplishment in generalist training, and to have a modest amount of focused training in their emphasis area. In particular, we expect Psychology Fellows to have completed their doctoral training and internship. Also, Psychology Fellows should have received their degree within two years of application. Trainees must be eligible to receive salary from the VA Salt Lake City Health Care System.
