Family Psychoeducation

Family Psychoeducation:

  • involves the consumer and one or more family members
  • involves regular (generally weekly) meetings for 20-30 sessions.
  • focuses on education about the illness, problem-solving skills and communication skills. Family interventions meeting these criteria have been shown to significantly reduce risk of relapse and rehospitalization in meta-analytic studies. Other forms of family intervention, e.g. family education, family support, family consultation, may provide other important services to consumers and families but are not evidence-based with respect to relapse.
