Bio: Dr. Cornelius is a tenured Professor of Psychiatry and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, and is board certified in both Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry. He is the Director of the MIRECC Comorbidity Clinic in Pittsburgh, and is the PI of a MIRECC-related genetics grant involving comorbid veterans. He is a Co-Principal Investigator and Scientific Director, Allegheny Tri-State (Pittsburgh) Node of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network (CTN). He was the Medical Director of a 28-bed inpatient dual diagnosis unit at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic (WPIC) of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine for a decade.
He is currently the PI of a NIDA treatment grant (R01 DA019142), and is the PI of a NIAAA treatment-related grant involving comorbid adolescents (R01 AA015173), and is currently the PI of a NIAAA K24 award (K24 AA015320). He is the PI of a NIDA neuroimaging fMRI) supplement. Dr. Cornelius is the Co-PI and Director of the Clinical Core of the NIDA center grant (CEDAR) studying the etiology of substance abuse, which also contains a neuroimaging component. He is a Co-Investigator on a NIAAA-funded neuroimaging study entitled, “Molecular Studies of Cognition in Chronic Alcoholism” (R01 AA014952). He has also been the PI or Co-Investigator on more than 30 other current or past grants. He is currently a faculty member on five T32 training grants.
Dr. Cornelius has authored or co-authored over 120 peer-reviewed articles, 12 book chapters, and over 200 presentations at national research conferences. He is a reviewer for over 35 journals and currently serves as an ad-hoc reviewer for grants associated with NIDA, NIAAA, and the VA. He is a “Distinguished Fellow” in the American Psychiatric Association.
Research Interests: Dr. Cornelius’ current research interests focus on the comorbidity of a drug (or alcohol) disorder in combination with a mood disorder. These comorbidity-related interests include the following areas: pharmacologic treatment, suicidality, clinical presentation, clinical course, etiology, and treatment utilization of patients with mood disorders in combination with alcohol dependence or other substance use disorders.
