Nicotine patch

* Follow the instructions of your primary care provider for the proper dosage and use of the nicotine patch.

  1. Stop smoking at midnight on your Quit Date. Apply the nicotine patch first thing in the morning of your Quit Date.
  2. Apply the patch to a clean, dry, hairless area of skin on your upper chest, upper arm, or hip. Avoid areas of irritated, oily, scarred, or broken skin.
  3. Remove the protective strip and immediately apply the patch to your skin. Never cut the patch. Press the patch in place with the palm of your hand for about 10 seconds.
  4. Wash your hands with water alone after applying the patch.
  5. If the patch falls off or loosens, replace it with a new one.
  6. Wear the patch continuously for 16 to 24 hours. The patch can be worn while showering or bathing. If you have bad dreams or trouble sleeping, you can take the patch off at night.
  7. To remove the patch:

    1. Peel off carefully

    2. Fold in half with the sticky sides touching

    3. Throw away

  8. Apply the next patch to a different area on the skin to prevent skin irritation.
  9. If you miss a dose, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular schedule. Do not apply a double dose to make up for the missed one.
  10. The patch can be used together with
    nicotine gum, nicotine lozenge, or bupropion (Zyban®/Wellbutrin®)
