* Follow the instructions of your primary care provider for the proper dosages and use of varenicline.
- Take varenicline as directed. Taking varenicline after eating and with a full glass of water can help reduce nausea.
- Varenicline is a tablet and is usually taken for 12 weeks, starting before your Quit Date:
Days 1-3: 1 (0.5mg) tablet in the morning
Days 4-7: 1 (0.5mg) tablet in the morning and 1 (0.5mg) tablet in the afternoon
Starting day 8: 1 (1mg) tablet in the morning and 1 (1mg) tablet in the afternoon
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
- Do not use varenicline in combination with NRT or bupropion.
Rarely, people taking varenicline have violent thoughts, intent, or actions towards themselves or others.
In VA, varenicline is only used if you:
- Have already tried to quit smoking with NRT or bupropion.
- Have been screened by your primary care provider (PCP) or mental health provider.
- Receive close follow-up from your PCP or mental health care provider while on varenicline.
