Meet the New Fellows
SC MIRECC Advanced Fellowship Programs in Mental Illness Research and Treatment are two-year postdoctoral training programs to develop research skills. The fellowships are available in in Little Rock, Arkansas and Houston, Texas. Welcome to our new fellows!

- Derrecka Boykin, PhD

Dr. Boykin is a first-year fellow in Houston. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from Northern Illinois University and completed her clinical internship at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. Her research has focused on identifying treatment-malleable risk and resilience factors that contribute to diverse trauma reactions. Recently, she has taken an interest in understanding the impact of trauma on identity formation as it relates to treatment engagement and utilization as well as clinical approaches to treating trauma. Dr. Boykin is excited to expand her work toward reducing disparities in health service use among rural and underserved Veterans recovering from trauma. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her family and friends, cooking, and watching Netflix.
- Sacha McBain, PhD

Dr. McBain is a first-year fellow in Little Rock. She received her PhD in clinical psychology from Palo Alto University and completed a predoctoral internship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Her research has broadly focused on trauma-informed care and patient-provider relationships to improve access to mental health services in medical settings. During the fellowship, she hopes to continue her work on the implementation of PTSD screening and technology-based brief intervention after acute injury or illness under the mentorship of Drs. Sara Landes and JoAnn Kirchner. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and dedicating time to her new venture into organic urban farming.
