Biography

Biography: Dr. Scharer is a first-year psychology fellow with the VA Advanced Fellowship in Mental Illness Research and Treatment program at the VISN 2 Center for Integrated Healthcare (CIH). Dr. Scharer completed his graduate training at the University of Missouri – St. Louis and earned his PhD in clinical psychology. He completed an APA-accredited predoctoral psychology internship at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, with an emphasis in integrated health.

Research Interests: Dr. Scharer’s research interests include development and evaluation of novel interventions for alcohol and other substance use and other health behaviors. Currently, he is particularly interested in brief interventions that can be delivered in primary care settings, as well as online and other technology-assisted interventions that can help increase dissemination of and access to evidence-based behavioral health services. Additional research interests include social and cultural determinants of addictive behaviors.
