This guide is for caregivers who support Veterans with dementia, including family members, friends, and staff in care facilities. It offers simple steps to use photos to help Veterans feel more connected and engaged; familiar pictures can bring back feelings and memories. This guide:

  • Introduces photo-elicitation—a way of using pictures to recall memories and make meaningful conversations.
  • Aims to encourage conversation, bring out comforting emotions, and help Veterans connect past experiences to the present.
  • Includes appendix that has helpful questions to guide conversations with Veterans during photo sessions.
