Alexander Young, MD, MSHS
Dr. Alexander S. Young is a psychiatrist and health services researcher. He is Director of the Health Services Unit of the VA Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) in Southern California, Associate Director of the VA HSR&D Center of Innovation at Los Angeles, Professor at the UCLA Department of Psychiatry, and Senior Scientist at RAND. Dr. Young focuses on evaluating and improving healthcare, with a particular emphasis on mental health, implementation science, patient-reported outcomes, patient-centered care, and innovative health informatics. He has led research grants from VA and NIMH evaluating implementation of effective practices, studying informatics systems to support improved care, and partnering with consumers and clinicians to develop and implement interventions to improve care. Current grants include evaluation of an internet-based, peer-supported system that provides tailored education regarding diet and exercise to people with mental illness; a study developing computerized assessment of patient preferences; and an evaluation of implementing a Patient-Centered Medical Home model adapted for people with serious mental illness. Dr. Young frequently presents and teaches about the treatment of mental illness, health services, and improving healthcare.
