Peer Specialists (PSs) are VA employees in recovery from mental illnesses and substance abuse disorders who help other Veterans to successfully engage in mental health and substance use treatment. The toolkit provides:

  • a definition of the PS role (including approved Position Descriptions),
  • a systematic approach for their integration onto clinical teams,
  • information about training and supervising PSs, and
  • information about other resources.

This toolkit was developed to help VHA medical centers and CBOCs comply with a 2012 White House Executive Order to hire and deploy an additional 800 Peer Specialists within VHA clinical care.
