An understanding of the Federal and VA regulations that address the protection of human research subjects is fundamental to conducting human research in the VA. However, investigators trying to tackle the administrative requirements created by these regulations can find the process increasingly time-consuming and potentially overwhelming. The MIRECC, VA Research and Development (R&D) Service, and the University of Maryland Baltimore Institutional Review Board (IRB) are committed to making this complicated administrative process as straightforward as possible. As a result, the following guide was developed by the MIRECC to facilitate the process of applying for and conducting human subject research in the VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS). The information is organized as follows:

Section One - New Protocol Approval for Conducting Research in the VAMHCS

Section Two - Setting Up the Research Study

Section Three - Helpful Resources
