Durham Fellowship Program

VA Mid-Atlantic MIRECC

The primary goal of the fellowship program is to train clinical psychologists and physicians to become leading clinical researchers in high-priority areas of mental health. Over the course of the two-year program, fellows are trained in advanced clinical care service delivery and advanced research methods in an interdisciplinary setting. The fellowship combines individual mentored research and clinical training with state-of-the-art educational experiences.

Training focus areas

Fellows in Durham participate in multidisciplinary research and clinical experiences spanning biological, psychological, and health systems approaches to post-deployment mental health.

  • Clinical interventions

    Training in evidence-based psychotherapies and intervention development for post-deployment mental health conditions.
  • Biological psychiatry

    Research in genomics, metabolomics, neuroimaging, and translational neuroscience related to Veteran mental health.
  • Health services research

    Projects focused on implementation science, healthcare systems, quality improvement, and Veteran-centered care delivery.

Program leadership and faculty

Fellows work closely with nationally recognized VA investigators, clinicians, and interdisciplinary mentors across research and clinical programs.

Eligibility requirements

Eligibility requirements for VA Office of Academic Affiliations fellowship programs are determined in accordance with current VA and Office of Academic Affiliations policies.

  • Clinical psychologists

    Applicants must be U.S. citizens and have completed all requirements for a doctoral degree in psychology from an APA-accredited graduate program, including completion of an APA-accredited internship, prior to the fellowship start date. Fellows must also meet all applicable VA credentialing and appointment requirements.

  • Psychiatrists and physicians

    Applicants must be U.S. citizens and graduates of an accredited medical school with completion of an accredited residency program in psychiatry or another relevant specialty area. Fellows must be eligible for VA credentialing, licensure, and clinical privileges in accordance with VA policy.

Application deadline

Applications for the Durham Advanced Fellowship in Mental Illness Research & Treatment are due December 1st annually unless otherwise noted. The program typically begins July 1st.
