- Choose a strategy for dealing with each of your smoking triggers
- Plan what you will do when you have a craving
Use the DEADS strategy to cope with your triggers:
- Delay - An urge will go away if you just give it time.
- Escape - Remove yourself from the situation or event that led to the urge.
- Avoid - Stay away from situations where you'll be tempted to smoke.
- Distract - Get busy and get back to what you were doing before the urge hit.
- Substitute - Choose something else in place of a cigarette.
