Nicotine lozenge

Menu

* Follow the instructions of your primary care provider for the proper dosage and use of the nicotine lozenges.

  1. Begin using nicotine lozenge after you stop smoking on your Quit Date.

    a. Combination with nicotine patch or bupropion: use 1 lozenge when you have a craving to smoke. Use up to 6-10 lozenges per day.

    b. Nicotine lozenges only (no other medicines to help you quit): use 1 lozenge every 1-2 hours and more lozenges as needed when you have a craving to smoke. Use up to 24 lozenges per day.

  2. Place 1 nicotine lozenge in your mouth between your cheek and gum and let it slowly dissolve. You may feel a slight tingling. This should take 20 to 30 minutes. Occasionally move the lozenge from one side of your mouth to the other. Minimize swallowing. Do not chew or swallow the lozenge.
  3. Do not eat the lozenge like a hard candy - it can cause an upset stomach or heartburn.
  4. Do not eat or drink for 15 minutes before or after using the nicotine lozenge. Also, do not eat or drink while the lozenge is in your mouth. Avoid acidic drinks like coffee, juice, and soft drinks since they can reduce the absorption of nicotine.
  5. Only use 1 lozenge at a time and wait for at least 30 minutes before using the next lozenge.
