Clinical Educators Grants Program

The Clinical Educators Grants Program is designed to support and encourage clinicians and educators to develop innovative educational interventions, enhance current educational materials or programs that target under-served or hard-to-reach populations and/or their families, or improve the system of health care delivery. Proposals must support the South Central MIRECC Mission. Clinical Educators Grants are funded up to $7,000.

VA Mental Health staff in VISN 16 and 17 are eligible to apply. Proposals from trainees (e.g. Fellows, residents, or interns) and Services other than Mental Health must include a Mental Health staff member as co-applicant.

Calls for proposals are usually announced in July of each year. Applications are due in September. Awards are announced in December.

MIRECC Trainee Programs (Expanded Details) 

Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment

  • 2-year research training program
  • 75% time devoted to research; 25% to clinical activities
  • Trains psychologists for eventual leadership roles in research, education, and clinical services, particularly in academic and medical care settings (e.g., the VA)

Training Residents in Psychiatry Scholarship (TRIPS)

  • Designed to attract and develop researchers for careers in the VA.
  • Primary goal is to increase the number of psychiatry residents entering post-residency research training Fellowships in the South Central Network (VISN 16).

Research Fellowship for Psychiatrists

  • Dept of VA Special Fellowship in Advanced Psychiatry
  • Located at Michael E. DeBakey VAMC in Houston, Texas, which is affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine
  • 2-year, post residency, specialized training for to become outstanding clinical researchers in high priority areas of mental health.
  • 75% time devoted to research and educational activities, and 25% to clinical training.
  • Stipends based on previously completed ACGME-accredited residency training.

 CBOC Mental Health Rounds 

CBOC Mental Health Rounds sponsored by the SC MIRECC are held the 2nd Wed of each month from 8:00-9:00 AM (CST).  The target audience includes mental health providers who work in the VISN 16 community-based outpatient clinics, although medical center mental health providers are welcome to participate.  For more information contact: Geri Adler, PhD, SC MIRECC, 713-794-8660; Geri.Adler@va.gov.
