Rocky Mountain MIRECC for VA Suicide Prevention

Rocky Mountain MIRECC for Veteran Suicide Prevention

Rocky Mountain Short Takes on Suicide Prevention:
Chain Analysis for Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors with Drs. Lauren Borges and Sean Barnes

13 August 2019

In this week’s podcast we turn the microphones over to Drs. Sean Barnes and Lauren Borges. Sean and Lauren are mental health clinicians and suicide prevention researchers. One of the unique aspects of Rocky Mountain MIRECC for Veteran Suicide Prevention is that we are both a research center and a clinical center (we also are an educational center and that’s why we create podcasts!). This means that our researchers are constantly involved in testing treatment approaches and then using the evidence-based treatment that work best to help Veterans.

Today Dr. Sean Barnes interviews Dr. Lauren Borges about a clinical technique called ‘Chain Analysis.’ Drs. Borges and Barnes and three other RMIRECC researcher/clinicians published a paper on chain analysis explaining its use and benefits, especially with Veterans experiencing suicidal thoughts and behaviors. This podcast gives Lauren and Sean a chance to further expand on chain analysis, so Veterans, caregivers and clinicians can better understand it and decide if it is a tool that might be helpful to them.

Last year we launched the website Treatment Works for Vets as a way to introduce Veterans and caregivers to evidence-based treatments for depression, problems sleeping, chronic pain, substance use and relationship issues. This podcast introduces another evidence-based treatment.
