Highlights from Our Anchor Sites

Our affiliates in Houston, Little Rock, and New Orleans work hard to promote mental health education, research, and treatment locally and nationally. Here are some highlights of their accomplishments over the past three months.

Houston

Dr. Tony Ecker Presented CBOC Mental Health Grand Rounds Webinar

Dr. Ecker presented at the National CBOC Mental Health Grand Rounds webinar series to an audience of more than 400 learners on the goals, elements, and methods of treating substance abuse disorder with cognitive behavioral therapy.

Dr. Lindsay presented with a panel that discussed mental health collaboration between the VA, State, and community at the 2019 Mental Health Summit hosted by the Council on Recovery.

Affiliates Attended SIRC Conference

Several affiliates attended the 2019 Society for Implementation Research Collaboration (SIRC) conference, including Drs. Sara Landes (SIRC President), Sacha McBain, Geoff Curran, and JoAnn Kirchner. Dr. Landes gave an oral presentation on developing a strategic implementation research plan within an integrated healthcare system while others presented posters.

Dr. Teresa Hudson Received Funding for Suicide Prevention Research Impact Network

Dr. Hudson, the Associate Director of the HSR&D Center for Mental Health and Outcomes Research (CeMHOR), received funding for an HSR&D COnsortia of REsearch (CORE) grant titled Suicide Prevention Research Impact NeTwork (SPRINT). SPRINT will accelerate suicide prevention research that will lead to improvements in care and that will ultimately result in reductions in suicide behaviors among Veterans. Drs. Hudson, Steven Dobscha and Mark Ilgen are the principal investigators of this grant.

Dr. Landes received the 2019 VHA iEx Best Demo in Innovation Research award for her presentation on her Caring Contacts for Suicide Prevention in Veterans project at the VHA Innovation Ecosystem conference.

Dr. Eva Woodward Received HSR&D Career Development Award

A former SC MIRECC fellow, Dr. Eva Woodward received an HSR&D Career Development Award (CDA) in the area of implementation science. Dr. Woodward will work on her CDA as a core investigator with CeMHOR (Director: Dr. Rick Owen) with support from her mentor Dr. JoAnn Kirchner (Director: Behavioral Health QUERI).

Dr. Laurel Franklin Named Assistant Chief of Psychology at New Orleans VA

Dr. Franklin, our New Orleans Site Leader, is the new Assistant Chief of Psychology at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System.

A summary of Drs. Franklin and Raines’s Psychiatry Research article on the overlap between self-reported PTSD and obsessive-compulsive disorder symptoms was summarized in Healio Psychiatry.

Dr. Amanda Raines Receives AVAPL Award

Dr. Raines received the Association of VA Psychology Leaders James Besyner Early Career Award for distinguished contributions to VA Psychology. This award honors exceptional early career contributions such as promoting the practice of clinical psychology through professional service, developing innovations in service delivery, and having a positive impact on health delivery systems.

Dr. Gala True Presents at Annual Elizabeth Dole Foundation Meeting

Dr. True presented collaborative research focused on military caregivers at the 4th annual convening of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. Dr. True presented with Sharon Urbina, an Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow, and her husband, Carlos Urbina, a Marine Corps Veteran. The session “From War to Home: The Impact of Invisible Injuries,” focused on traumatic brain injury and the impact of war and military service on Veterans and their caregivers.
