Our Mission & Vision
The mission of the Rocky Mountain MIRECC is to study suicide with the goal of reducing suicidal ideation and behaviors in the Veteran population. Towards this end, the work of the Rocky Mountain MIRECC is focused on promising clinical interventions, as well as the cognitive and neurobiological underpinnings of suicidal thoughts and behaviors that may lead to innovative prevention strategies.
The vision of the Rocky Mountain MIRECC is to increase information and treatment options available to Veterans, their families and the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) so that care decisions and care provided are aimed at decreasing suicide risk.

Lisa A. Brenner, Ph.D., is a Board-Certified Rehabilitation Psychologist, a Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R), Psychiatry, and Neurology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus, and the Director of the Department of Veterans Affairs Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC). She is also Vice Chair of Research for the Department of PM&R. She has over 20 years of experience working with Veterans and has championed numerous national efforts to prevent suicide among Veterans. Her primary area of research interest is traumatic brain injury, co-morbid psychiatric disorders, and negative psychiatric outcomes including suicide.

Nazanin Bahraini, Ph.D. is a Clinical Research Psychologist. She is the Associate Director of Research at the Rocky Mountain MIRECC. She is also an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Her areas of research interest include dissemination and implementation of evidence-based practices in suicide prevention and novel, transdiagnostic treatment approaches for mental health conditions.

Dr. Barnes is a licensed clinical psychologist and investigator at the Rocky Mountain MIRECC, a consultant with the VA Suicide Risk Management Consultation Program and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. His primary clinical and research interests include suicide risk management and prevention and treatment of moral injury. Dr. Barnes' research program includes projects aimed at improving suicide risk management and developing effective contextual behavioral interventions for helping patients build vital and meaningful lives.

Dr. Borges is a licensed clinical psychologist and investigator at the Rocky Mountain MIRECC and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Her primary line of research concerns the application of contextual behavioral interventions to help Veterans approach emotions like guilt and shame more flexibly. She is currently grant-funded to investigate Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for Moral Injury (ACT-MI) and ACT for suicide prevention (ACT for Life).

Bryann DeBeer, Ph.D., is the Director of the VA Patient Safety Center of Inquiry - Suicide Prevention Collaborative, a Clinical Research Psychologist at the VA Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center and a Visiting Associate Professor at Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Her research focuses on three interrelated topics: 1) understanding risk and protective factors for suicide; 2) translating these factors into novel interventions; and 3) leveraging implementation science to improve suicide prevention in organizations. She has received funding from the VA, DoD and the American Psychological Association to support her work.

Claire A. Hoffmire, PhD, serves as a principal investigator and co-lead for the ASPIRE Lab at the Department of Veterans Affairs Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) for Veteran Suicide Prevention and Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Hoffmire has worked in the field of Veteran suicide prevention since 2012; her research aims to inform evidence-based suicide prevention programs for all Veterans, within and outside the VA. Dr. Hoffmire is committed to conducting research which can be leveraged to improve upstream, public health oriented suicide prevention programs for historically underrepresented and underserved Veterans, such as women and those not engaged in VA healthcare.

Ryan Holliday, Ph.D., is a Clinical Research Psychologist at the Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center for Veteran Suicide Prevention and Assistant Professor at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. His clinical and research interest focus upon understanding the intersection of trauma, psychosocial stressors (such as homelessness and justice involvement) and mental health. He is further interested in translating these findings into evidence-based practice.

Dr. Kinney is an occupational therapist who conducts research aimed at improving care quality and associated outcomes for Veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and other potentially disabling conditions. His primary area of research focuses on promoting Veterans' receipt of evidence-based treatment for sleep conditions following mTBI (e.g., insomnia). He is also interested in understanding how multi-level determinants (e.g., person-, provider-, system- or societal-level) influence service delivery and positive outcomes among individuals with a history of mTBI.

Dr. Kondo conducts clinical trials of novel treatment for Veterans with suicidal thoughts and actions. He is also Principal Investigator for the Rocky Mountain MIRECC project "Altitude and Psychiatric Symptoms," which combines human neuroimaging, population epidemiology and animal model research to study the impact of altitude and hypoxia on the brain. These effects include impaired brain energy metabolism, and alterations to neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine.

Nathaniel Mohatt is a community psychologist, with extensive experience working with rural and indigenous communities. His areas of expertise are developing community-based suicide prevention programs, community-based participatory research to reduce health disparities and cross-cultural considerations for suicide prevention. Dr Mohatt holds appointments as a Research Psychologist with the VA's Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (RMIRECC); an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Denver (UCD) School of Medicine; and a Clinical Instructor in Psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine, Division of Prevention and Community Research.

Lindsey L. Monteith, Ph.D., is a Clinical Research Psychologist in the Rocky Mountain MIRECC and Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Her research aims to ensure that suicide prevention initiatives are patient-centered, gender-sensitive and trauma-informed. Dr. Monteith co-leads the Advancing Suicide PreventIon for undeRserved vEterans (ASPIRE) Lab within the Rocky Mountain MIRECC. Dr. Simonetti is a hospital medicine physician at the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center and investigator with the Rocky Mountain MIRECC for Suicide Prevention. His research focuses on developing patient-centered firearm safety interventions for individuals at risk of suicide. As an educator, he works locally and nationally to support VA and community-based clinicians in delivering evidence-based and culturally competent lethal means safety counseling to at-risk Veterans.

Dr. Adams is a Health Services Researcher with the Rocky Mountain MIRECC, with expertise examining co-occurring substance use and mental health conditions following traumatic brain injury. Dr. Adams is a Multiple Principal Investigator (Brenner/Adams) on an R01 from the National Institute of Mental Health and the Office of the Director at NIH which is integrating data from the Department of Defense and Veterans Health Administration to enhance suicide prevention efforts for military members returning from deployments. Dr. Adams is a Senior Scientist at the Institute for Behavioral Health at the Heller School for Social Policy & Management at Brandeis University.

Dr. Donovan completed her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Florida State University, and she joined the Rocky Mountain MIRECC as a Postdoctoral Fellow in September 2020. Dr. Donovan's doctoral work focused on effects of social isolation and probiotic intake on the gut-immune-brain axis and behaviors in socially monogamous prairie voles. Dr. Donovan is particularly interested in examining how environmental, psychosocial and lifestyle factors can shape mental health outcomes.

Dr. Cogan completed her PhD in Clinical Psychology at the University of Tulsa and joined the Rocky Mountain MIRECC in August 2021 as an Advanced Fellow in Mental Illness Research and Treatment. Dr. Cogan's research focuses on the interaction between PTSD, sleep disturbance, and suicide in at-risk populations.

Dr. Kittel-Moseley completed her Ph.D. in Epidemiology at the University of Rochester and joined the Rocky Mountain MIRECC as a Postdoctoral Fellow in January 2022. Her doctoral work examined the role of physical health and social isolation in the mental health of cancer survivors transitioning out of treatment and into survivorship. Dr. Kittel-Moseley is interested in the intersection of physical and mental health and how this informs upstream suicide prevention efforts.

Dr. Reis completed his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of Kansas and joined the Rocky Mountain MIRECC in December 2020 as an Advanced Fellow in Mental Illness Research and Treatment. During graduate school, he studied the relationship between lifestyle variables and mental health outcomes, as well as the impact of seasonal sunlight on depression treatment outcomes. Dr. Reis is currently examining the use of bright light therapy within the Veterans Health Administration.

Ms. Wendleton dedicates herself to research projects that ally and partner with Veterans to impact their community and the healthcare that serves them. She serves as the Program Manager for the Together With Veterans Program, a community lead rural Veteran public health suicide prevention program. She also Co-leads the multi-site ORH Growing Rural Outreach through Veteran Engagement (GROVE) Center, developing of tools and resources for engaging rural Veterans in VA operational and research projects and strengthening partnerships between VA and rural Veteran communities.

Chandni Sheth, PhD, is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Utah. She obtained her PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology from the University of Utah in 2016. Her interests include investigating neurobiological alterations underlying psychopathology using multimodal neuroimaging and using this knowledge towards finding better therapeutic targets for intervention in Veteran populations.

Dr. Stamper is interested in the link between mental and physical health and the bacteria that live in and around us. Under Dr. Lisa Brenner, Dr. Stamper is engaged in the US Veteran Microbiome Project (US-VMP) which uses cutting edge technology and computational analysis to elucidate the links between mental and physical health and the microbiome and metagenome. Dr. Stamper is involved in Randomized Clinical Trials run by Dr. Lisa Brenner to investigate novel therapeutics targeting the gut brain axis for treatment of PTSD.

Andrew grew up in central Texas and earned his BSW and MSW at Baylor University. He moved to Denver in August 2020 and worked to find housing for veterans in rural Colorado before joining Together With Veterans. Andrew enjoys collecting fountain pens and taking care of his two fish.
