VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment (MIRT)
Three Mid-Atlantic (VISN 6) MIRECC sites have been awarded VA Advanced Fellowships. Although all sites have a post-deployment mental health focus, each site has particular specialty programs and areas of strength. The Durham VAMC in Durham, NC is affiliated with Duke University School of Medicine. Our close affiliation with Duke provides easy access to numerous additional offerings, including Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences Grand Rounds, Psychiatry department and Psychology department colloquia, as well as specialized offerings from the Center for Human Genetics, the Brain Imaging and Analysis Center, the Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, among others. Durham is the hub site for our MIRECC, and the home of our major research labs: Genetics, Interventions, Health Services, Neuroscience, Neuroimaging, and Neurocognitive. Central Virginia VA Healthcare System (Richmond VA Medical Center)
The MIRECC/CoE VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Mental Illness Research and Treatment (MIRT) at the Central Virginia VA Health Care System (CVHCS) trains health service psychologists to become leading clinical researchers in high priority areas of mental health. Over the course of the two-year program, Fellows receive intensive mentoring and didactics in clinical research competencies such as grant writing, research design, and ethics while receiving supervised clinical training in cutting-edge treatments and programs. A special emphasis of the fellowship program is to train Fellows to conduct translational research that brings basic science to clinical practice. Fellows develop a career-building research program through work with a mentor, selected from: Fellows develop a career-building research program through work with a mentor, selected from: spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation research (Drs. McDonald and Bjork), traumatic brain injury and brain health (TBI; Drs. Klyce, Perrin, Walton, and Walker), neuroscience and substance use (Drs. Bjork and Reisweber), PTSD (Dr. Amstadter), and health disparities (Drs. Perrin). Fellows may also collaborate with additional investigators at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and across the Mid-Atlantic Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center (MIRECC) to learn specific skills, join writing teams, and access other resources that are useful for career development. Salisbury VAMC
The W.G. (Bill) Hefner VAMC in Salisbury, NC is one of the fastest growing VAMCs in the nation with numerous specialty programs and particular strengths in the areas of PTSD and TBI. We are affiliated with Wake Forest School of Medicine, providing fellows with access to their neuroscience and translational medicine programs. In-person weekly Advanced Neuropsychology and Neuroanatomy seminars are provided. The training program is designed to meet criteria of the Houston Guidelines for postdoctoral training in neuropsychology, thus ensuring that Fellows are eligible to apply for board certification in neuropsychology at the completion of the two-year fellowship. Three of the five neuropsychologists on staff, including both of the program directors, are board certified in clinical neuropsychology. Clinical rotations can include bedside testing in the Community Living Center and outpatient testing through the Polytrauma, ADHD, and Neuropsychology clinics. MIRECC fellows can be expected to obtain all clinical hours needed for licensure via direct clinical care and clinical research. The majority of a Fellow’s time is spent on research and educational activities. Research topics may vary, but a unifying theme in the lab is neuropsychological functioning and neuroimaging of TBI and comorbid conditions in combat Veterans.
